The “Fundamentals of Architecture + Design for Wellbeing + Happiness” seminar offers an introductory exploration of wellbeing design. It begins with the importance of wellbeing as a focus in the design of spaces: and delves into mental concepts and models: highlighting also interdisciplinary integration as necessary foundations.
The core contents of CO2 (in air quality): circadian rhythm (in lighting): and sleep design are practical and research-backed. The 4th topic of movement through design interventions is illustrated by a compelling research case study. This seminar is recommended for professionals seeking to enhance knowledge regarding design’s impact on wellbeing.
"Frven’s highly original and hugely engaging CPD was thoroughly enjoyed by our whole office. Frven brings a very very personal and no nonsense approach to the challenges that architects face in ensuring that happiness and wellbeing is in focus and in balance in both their output and their input and some very simple ideas as to how to guide oneself."

The presentation at ANFA conference (Sep 2023) in San Diego is an insightful exploration of the #stairWELL project, a collaborative endeavor involving DP Architects, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Neuro AU, and funded by the Design Singapore Council.
Andrea de Paiva and Frven Lim present this innovative project that seeks to understand how design can serve as a catalyst for promoting healthier behaviors, specifically focusing on staircase use as a method to encourage physical activity in office environments.
The central hypothesis of the project is that strategic design interventions within staircases can significantly increase their use over elevators, thereby promoting physical activity. Considering the adverse effects of sedentarism on both general and brain health, such as reduced cognitive functions and the negative impact on mood and well-being, the study is rooted in the belief that design can be a powerful tool to combat inactivity.
Through a field experiment involving various design interventions (visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli) in an office building's staircase, the study observed the impact on the frequency of staircase use by the employees. The interventions, ranging from simple visual cues to more complex multisensory stimuli, were designed to make the staircases more appealing and engaging.
Preliminary results indicate a positive response, with an overall increase in staircase use during intervention periods compared to control weeks. Specifically, the introduction of physical plants showed the most substantial increase in traffic, suggesting a strong preference for natural elements in the work environment. This was followed by visual and lighting interventions, all contributing to a sustained increase in staircase use, even in the absence of the interventions, hinting at the beginning of habit formation.
The study's findings suggest that thoughtfully designed spaces can significantly influence healthier lifestyle choices in the workplace. By integrating regular physical activity into daily routines through design, there's potential for a long-term positive impact on both physical and mental health.

”Wellbeing of staff in Hospitality Sector”
This 12-page report summarises a study we conducted online (in 4Q2023) for the hospitality sector across the world.
It reveals how the spaces dedicated for the staff (i.e. back-of-house) are more important than we ever consider them to be, if there is any desire to outperform competitors.
Because happy staff find it the easiest to smile, and the natural smiles fire up energy levels crucial for good hospitality business.
